Pass go, collect your $200, and …buy Castlegar?

You bet, if the city has its way.

Mayor Lawrence Chernoff said he’s encouraging any and all to nominate Castlegar as one of the “wild card” communities, in hopes the city will have its own space on the board of the new Canadian edition of Monopoly.

“I found the information about the contest on the Internet,” he said. “I thought we have such a unique and wonderful community here in the Kootenays, that it seemed only due and fitting that we should be featured.”

He said the winner will be determined based on number of nominations – but where Castlegar may have fewer residents than some, it has infinitely more heart.

Voters can submit a nomination every single day, so participation rates will hold more sway than sheer population size.

“It needs the support of everyone – absolutely everyone – to get us there,” he said, “so we really hope residents will take a moment each day to nominate our remarkable community.”

Two communities will ultimately be chosen as additions to the other pre-selected Canadian cities that will be featured on the Monopoly board.
