Huffington Post launches website in Canada, for Canadians
The Huffington Post launched its Canadian edition Thursday as the first part of its international expansion.
In May 2005, Arianna Huffington launched the Huffington Post as an alternative space for commentary, competing with the popular right-wing news website, the Drudge Report.
Three years later she began launching local versions — Chicago, Denver, New York and Los Angeles.
And with 1.5 million Canadians visiting the sites in March, the demand for Huffington Post style news from Canadians was evident, said Huffington in a post on her new website.
“Canadians are no strangers to The Huffington Post: 1.5 million of them visited us in March,” Huffington wrote. “Starting our international expansion north of the border was a natural.”
On Feb. 7 AOL acquired the Huffington Post for $315 million U.S., and made Huffington the president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group.
A United Kingdom version will be launched July 6.
