Expect a deluge in the mail as delivery resumes in Nelson, across country
The wait is over: your bills and unwanted flyers will begins arriving in Nelson today.
Canada Post deliveries will resume Tuesday after a month of postal disputes between Canada Post and its 48,000 employees.
After the Commons and Senate gave approval to Bill C-6 — ordering locked-out postal employees back to work — on the weekend, postal workers in Nelson and across the country were back to work Monday and now are into full swing on delivering the backlog of mail.
Although the postal company said the mail delivery is going smoothly, it could take several days, even weeks before the backlog is cleared and the mail is caught up.
The U.S. Postal Service is now accepting mail bound for Canada, with letters in the system being sent north in “stages,” the company reported.
On Monday, the CBC reported that Canada Post red mailboxes that were sealed shut during the lockout of 48,000 workers were reopened, and plant workers returned to their sorting jobs.
People and businesses have begun to receive mail starting Tuesday, while post offices closed during the contract dispute also reopened.
Mail already in the system is being handled as a priority, the Crown company said in a statement. Canada Post is urging people to do their regular mailings.
