September slightly warmer than normal says Southeast Fire Centre Weather Service

The public got an early taste of winter during September according to monthly weather details from the Southeast Fire Centre Weather Service.
The winter bite came during the middle of the month when the thermometer dipped below freezing.
“New record daily minimum temperatures of -1.1 and -0.7 degrees (Celsius) were recorded during the early morning hours the 11th and 12th respectively,” Ron Lakeman, weather forecaster for the Southeast Fire Centre said in his monthly media release.
“These are also the new earliest fall season below freezing temperatures on record for the Castlegar Airport.”
“The previous earliest below freezing temperature occurred September 13th, 1970,” Lakeman added.
Lakeman said the first half of September was extremely variable as an upper trough provided cool, unsettled conditions the first few days of the month.
“High pressure followed for a few sunny, warm days,” he said.
“The warmest temperature of the month and a new record daily maximum temperature of 30.2 degrees was recorded during the afternoon of September 7th.”
Then the dip in temperature, due to an modified Arctic air mass, arrived before the remainder of the month saw more seasonal weather with a couple of Pacific disturbances providing a few cool, wet days and high pressure allowing for several warm, sunny days.
Lakeman said the mean monthly temperature was slightly warmer than normal for September.
However, the total amount of rain during the month was only 62 percent of normal.
