RCMP concerned with increase in speed on highways; 13 vehicles seized in past week
The West Kootenay Traffic Services/Nelson IRSU are concerned with the recent increase in speeding vehicles on highways in the region.
Acting OIC South East District John Ferguson said in a media release drivers should not increase speed thanks to an early spring that has seen highway crews clean up roads.
“We still have wild life, cyclists, pedestrians and tourists using our roads,” Ferguson said.
“In the last week (WKTS/IRSU) have stopped and seized 13 vehicles for seven days for exceeding the posted speed limit by 40 km/hr,” Ferguson added.
“These speeds have occurred by drivers in the morning travelling to work and in early afternoon, evening.”
Ferguson said vehicles travelling in excess of 40 km/hr you can be charged for excessive speed with a fine of $368 and points or if more then 60 km/hr $483 plus points.
“On top of the fine your car will be seized for seven days, costing you storage and a tow bill,” Ferguson said.
“On top of the financial burden if involved in a crash your insurance depending on circumstances can be compromised.”
RCMP realize nice weather comes fast driving but are warning the public to obey the speed laws.
“We are out there watching and no tolerance will be allowed for excessive speed,” Ferguson said.
“We want the Kootenay Boundary area to be the safest in the province and so far we are. Please help us keep it that way.”
