THIRD UPDATE FOR MONDAY: MSSS to remain closed Tuesday, Silverwood trip cancelled
Officials at Mount Sentinel Secondary School have indicated the school will remain closed Tuesday. They issued the following bulletin on their website at 5 p.m. Monday:
“Mount Sentinel Secondary School will be open for staff members.
“As this decision came late in the day today (Monday, June 27) there will be no school for students at Mount Sentinel Secondary School on Tuesday, June 28.
“Staff will meet together, and focus their efforts on planning for graduation and the completion of the year.
“Given that the decision regarding school opening came late in the day and after consultation with all of our partner groups, we have decided to cancel the Silverwood trip.”
The school will be open for a half day on Wednesday, the final day of school for the semester.
School Administration will be working with the Grad Planning Committee to plan a graduation event.
Previous coverage:
While police are still declining to detail the nature of threats that caused the emergency evacuation and closure of Mount Sentinel Secondary School Friday afternoon, nor to whom the threats were directed, the school itself has released on its website that, “the nature of the threat we received did not include other schools”.
There was also a controlled release of students from the nearby Brent Kennedy Elementary School (meaning that they took extra care in seeing the kids got on their buses or whatever their means of transportation home) on Friday purely as a precautionary measure.
Mount Sentinel Secondary School remains closed today, but all other schools in the area are open with buses running as usual.
An 18-year-old Mount Sentinel student has been arrested and appeared in Castlegar court today in relation to the incident, but the court has issued a publication ban with regard to today’s appearance. He’s set to appear in court again in Nelson on Wednesday.
