UPDATED: Former Alberta Premier Jim Prentice confirmed killed in Lake Country plane crash
The RCMP is saddened to confirm that four individuals have been killed in a plane crash that occurred late Thursday night, October 13 in Lake Country.
Media agencies have confirmed one the four people on the plane was former Alberta premier Jim Prentice.
Prentice, 60, was aboard a twin-engine Cessna Citation that disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff from Kelowna. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, approximately four kilometres into a heavily wooded area north of Beaver Lake Road, east of Lake Country.
“Our police officers and police dog reached the crash scene shortly after midnight, but unfortunately they were not able to locate any survivors,” says Corporal Dan Moskaluk, spokesperson for the RCMP in Southeastern BC.
“There was catastrophic damage at the crash site.”
The RCMP, which has called a press conference for 3:30 p.m. Friday, continue to work with the Transportation Safety Board and BC Coroner’s Service.
Police report plane crash near Lake Country
The RCMP is working with the Transportation Safety Board after the wreckage of a downed aircraft was located near Lake Country late Thursday night, October 13 Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said in a media release Friday.
“On October 13, 2016 at 10:07 pm, the Kelowna RCMP and Lake Country RCMP detachments were alerted by the Surrey Air Traffic Control Centre that they had lost contact with a Citation jet shortly after its takeoff from the Kelowna International Airport,” Moskaluk, spokesperson for the RCMP in Southeast District, said in the release.
“The aircraft was destined for Calgary.”
Moskaluk said several resources were immediately dispatched to the jet’s last
known location.
“RCMP investigators located the crash site approximately four kilometers into a heavily wooded area north of Beaver Lake Road east of Lake Country.”
Moskaluk said he is currently heading to scene right now and RCMP will
continue to secure the crash site, awaiting the arrival of the Transportation Safety Board.
