Castlegar Rotary is taking fundraising to new heights, with an event this Friday that’s sure to make participants high on giving.

The event, slated for Dec. 2 from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. in front of City Hall, will see a scissor-lift race, putting some of our finest citizens 30 feet into the air in a race to the highest dollar amount for an excellent international cause.

“By donating, you can help raise a team, and keep things fun,” said one of the event organizers, Julie Leffelaar. “Then stay for the Christmas parade and celebrations starting soon after (Winterfest).”

Ed. Note: scissor lifts are the machines in which you see maintenance workers repair street lights, etc. and were made available for this event courtesy Trowelex and Mitchell’s.

“The money will go to support the construction of clean water projects in the Amazon region of Peru, where 20 per cent of children under the age of five die from parasitic infection,” Leffelaar said. “Remote villages, accessed only by boat, currently rely on polluted water from the Amazon, or on well water that is biologically and chemically contaminated. The installation of anti-microbial water tanks that collect rainwater is a first step toward improving the livelihood of these communities.

“There have been two successful installations of rainwater collection systems in the area during 2016, and Rotary is now embarking on an ambitious two-year program that will see the installation of similar rainwater collection systems in three communities near the Amazon city of Iquitos. Castlegar Rotary will apply very soon for a Global Grant, which will triple the funds.”
