A quick response by Nelson Fire Rescue avoided what could have been a disastrous outcome after a grass fire started on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) lands near Kal Tire Monday evening.

Nelson Fire Rescue said in a media release firefighters responded to the call at 7:22 p.m. Monday. Both on duty members were joined by four additional members responding to the station from home to battle the slow-moving fire.

“Upon arrival of the first crew, a slow-moving grass fire was observed between the rail tracks and the lake,” the media release said.

“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to keep the fire from spreading towards any structures or forested areas.”

Nelson Fire Rescue said the fire was about 400 feet from the nearest road access and approximately1400 square feet in size.

“The initial crew was able to extend hose lines and put water on the fire to keep it from spreading,” the release said.

“When the additional members arrived, complete extinguishment and overhaul was completed.”

Nelson Fire Rescue said the fire appears to have been the result of carelessly discarded smoking materials.

In all, six firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine, one tender truck, and one utility vehicle.

There were no injuries were reported because of this incident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and Nelson Police Department members attended the scene.

Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to not discard smoking material except into an approved receptacle, and, to call 911 immediately if they spot a fire.
