Cops for Kids Ride stops in Grand Forks Saturday
A trio of law enforcement members from Nelson are in Kelowna Friday for the start of the 6th annual Cops for Kids Ride.
BC Sheriffs Mike Kosof and Rob Crowder, along with Nelson RCMP Cst. Andrew McCabe, are among the 25 25 riders and seven support people from agencies within Southeast District to raise awareness and essential funds for children in medical, physical or traumatic crisis.
The 2017 Ride will take the team across the south eastern corner of British Columbia,.
During their 10-day fundraising journey, Cops for Kids riders will cycle into 18 different communities across South Eastern British Columbia, facing some mountainous terrain and everlasting summer heat. The route includes the assent and decent of two mountains passes: the Anarchist Mountain and the Paulson summit as a part of the 1,000 kilometre the team will complete.
The ride begins Friday, with stops in Grand Forks Saturday, September 9th; Castlegar Sunday, September 10th and Nelson Monday, September 11th.
The ride will bring the team to Nelson on Monday, September 11th overnight before their journey on to Creston.
As veterans of the Cops for Kids Ride, Kosof and Crowder are thrilled to have McCabe join the team this year for a truly rewarding experience.
“The children we families that we meet during the Cops for Kids Ride are so grateful for our assistance and funding, it makes the pedalling seem like the easy part of the journey, ” explains Crowder.
“These families are constantly struggling with costs for items not covered by government programs or larger charities, so it’s important for Cops for Kids to be there to jump in and assist with funds.”
Funds raised from this event stay within our communities to fund specific items required by children facing illness, disability or traumatic crisis through a grant application process. Since 2001 the group has raised over $4 million dollars through their fundraising efforts.
“With many of the riders having completed another long season of summer policing duties, they’re now heading out the door again to continue to give back to their community. With a short turn around, this shows what an exemplary group of committed individuals make up this special team,” boasts Cops for Kids President Grant Fletcher.
“Each rider has volunteered and trained on their own time, in addition to raising a minimum of $2,000 in order to be a part of our team,” he adds. “We’ve got great sponsors, donors, and supporters who will be cheering us on from home so we’re excited to hit the road and make them proud.”
Donations are graciously accepted at any time. To follow the team along their journey or to make a donation please visit the website at www.copsforkids.org
