Inclement weather leads to nine-car crash, then three-car crash in and about Castlegar

Weather was the primary factor in two multi-vehicle MVIs this morning, according to RCMP Cpl. Brett Turner.
First was the “schmozzle” called in at 10:15 a.m. involving nine vehicles on Hwy 3 west just before 14 Avenue.
Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio said there were actually two groups of vehicles involved in this.
“There were two separate groups of vehicles involved, totalling nine vehicles,” he said. “The first group involved three semi-trucks and a five-ton delivery truck, and the second group lower down the highway involved a total of five vehicles. This group involved three passenger vehicles, and two trucks pulling trailers.”
He said the highway was blocked in both directions.
“When we arrived on scene, the RCMP had already shut down the highway and occupants from one of the passenger vehicles were in BCAS care. I cannot confirm the number or nature of their injuries.
“We assisted with hazmat control and scene safety and I also requested mutual aid assistance from Ootischenia Fire Department (OFD) for traffic scene safety as we were also dispatched to another call out of town,” he added. “I would like to thank OFD for their assistance.
“We transferred the scene over to MOTI and left the scene at (12:42 p.m.). The highway was still closed at the time we left.”
The second situation to which Lattanzio referred was a three-vehicle MVI on Pass Creek Road, which Robson Fire Department attended.
“No one was injured,” said RCMP Cpl. Brett Turner, adding how critical it is that people are properly equipped for winter driving conditions. “And please, please slow down.”
Turner also reminded motorists that in about an hour the temperature is going to start dropping and all this wet snow will turn to ice.
