FedEx buys city airport land for distribution centre/warehouse
The City of Castlegar will see a major development near the West Kootenay Regional Airport early in 2020.
FedEx has purchased land near the West Kootenay Regional Airport and plans to construct a warehouse building that will serve as a distribution centre and office space. The company chose Castlegar for a variety of reasons, including its proximity to major highways and customer distribution centres and local workforce.
Today, Council approved issuing FedEx a Development Permit, allowing it to proceed with breaking ground and setting-up operations in Castlegar. The City will also be constructing an access road to support development at the airport lands which is expected to continue throughout 2020 and into the future.
“This news is very exciting for our city,” says Mayor Bruno Tassone. “Attracting a business of this size signals a strong economy for our city and will create opportunities for residents in our community.”
With Castlegar’s population expected to grow by 16 per cent before 2040, the city is planning for this growth and positioning itself by creating thriving and resilient businesses, industry, and opportunities – all part of the city’s 2019-2023 Strategic Plan.
The city-owned lands surrounding the West Kootenay Regional Airport present a huge opportunity as they are the largest flat, developable, serviced section of land in the West Kootenay. The city is actively promoting and planning for additional development of the lands.
The City of Castlegar is a service centre in the West Kootenay. The diversified and growing economy is focussed on the forestry, energy and mining sectors in the valley, and commercial services in the city. Quality of life features backcountry adventure and an increasingly dynamic urban culture, including the Millennium Park and Ponds and Sculpture Walk.
