Driver seriously injured in early morning head-on collision near Granite Road/Hwy 3A/6
A driver was seriously injured following a head-on collision Tuesday morning west of Nelson at the intersection of Highway 3A/6 and Granite Road Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said in a media release.
The accident happened at approximately 6:42 a.m. when a car collided with a loaded dump truck, trapping the driver inside the vehicle.
“An east bound vehicle had collided head on with a dump truck in the left turn lane towards Granite Road,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services.
“NFRS crews used Jaws to remove the driver’s door providing work access in coordination with ambulance paramedics.”
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services the driver of the vehicle sustained serious injuries and was removed and transported directly to Kootenay Lake Hospital while. driver of the dump truck was uninjured.
Both on-duty members responded immediately with three additional members responding from home.
In all, five firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine, and one utility vehicle.
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services worked in coordination with EHS ambulance, YRB, and Western Auto Wreckers on scene for one hour while routing east bound traffic on Highway 3A/6 onto Granite Road.
The cause of the accident is being investigated by the RCMP.
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to always wear seat belts when driving.
In this case, the proper use of seat belts and airbags were a factor in preventing a significantly worse outcome.
