The B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) has reached out to the Minister of Labour, requesting the appointment of a Special Mediator to help resolve the ongoing strike between Western Pacific Marine (WPM) and BCGEU ferry workers in the Kootenay region. The strike, now in its fifth month, is impacting workers hoping to reach a fair agreement and communities that significantly rely on WPM’s ferry service.

The two sides have previously engaged an independent mediator at earlier stages of bargaining. However, due to the challenges introduced by WPM’s sudden reduction in wage offers, the union believes it is necessary to enlist a Special Mediator.

Special Mediators are appointed by and report to the Ministry of Labour. They have expertise and more authority in addressing challenging labour disputes.

“As our bargaining committee continues to push for a deal, our priority remains finding a resolution that benefits both ferry workers and the community they serve,” said BCGEU President Paul Finch. “After five months on strike, workers want to return to full-time work with the security of a fair collective agreement that will ensure service levels are preserved for years to come.”

Finch added, “The community relies on a dependable ferry service, and the workers deserve not only job security but also a sustainable future. It’s time to focus on finding a fair resolution.”
