OP/ED: Neighbours United urges MPs to work together to support people and nature
Following last week’s federal election, Neighbours United congratulates all newly elected Members of Parliament in the Kootenays, across British Columbia, and throughout Canada. We urge our elected leaders to work together across party lines to ensure all Canadians have access to clean air and water, a healthy environment, and a strong economy. By caring for our land with the long term in mind, we can create good-paying, sustainable jobs—and build a better future for people, nature, and the next generation.
Everyone deserves a safe place to call home—today and tomorrow.
“I am so excited about what just happened. Canadians showed up in record numbers to vote — and we helped! By casting their ballots, people stood up for our shared values: healthy communities, nature, responsible resource development,” said Molli Bennett, Executive Director of Neighbours United.
In the lead-up to the election, Neighbours United called almost 20,000 people across the country to make sure they had everything they needed to vote on April 28.
“The experience has been so rewarding and exciting! Twelve volunteers in the West Kootenays called thousands of residents to help them make a voting plan,” said Joelle Burnie, Neighbours United’s Defend Our Home Manager. “When the stakes are high and so much feels out of our control, supporting our communities to get out and vote builds real people power for a better democracy.”
Neighbours United calls on the new government to put differences aside and act quickly in support of the people and places Canadians love. That means backing policies that take better care of nature, strengthen communities, and reflect the values Canadians showed up to vote for
