Trail man and Fruitvale man arrested following theft and assault with a weapon in Castlegar
On January 13, 2025, shortly before noon, Castlegar RCMP responded to a report of two individuals allegedly threatening staff after stealing merchandise from a business in Castlegar, according to Castlegar detachment commander Sgt. Monty Taylor..
“The suspects fled in a vehicle, and police obtained a description of both the individuals and the associated vehicle,” he said.
“RCMP officers from Castlegar and neighboring detachments conducted patrols and located a vehicle matching that description. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver failed to stop and turned onto a forest service road,” Taylor said.
He said police located the vehicle a short distance away, and two individuals were taken into custody without incident. A search of the vehicle and surrounding area resulted in the seizure of an imitation firearm, and merchandise believed to have been stolen from the Castlegar store.
“Dennis Mahon, 35 years of Fruitvale, BC and Kyle Doherty, 38 years, of Trail, BC, have both been charged with the following Criminal Code offences: Using an imitation firearm in commission of an offence contrary to section 85(2), theft under $5000 contrary to section 334(b), assault with a weapon contrary to section 267(a), uttering threats contrary to section 264.1(1), and possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose contrary to section 88(1),” Taylor said.
“In addition, Mr. Mahon has also been charged with flight from police while operating a motor vehicle contrary to section 320.17.”
Both Mahon and Doherty, appeared in court and were released on bail conditions to next appear in Castlegar Provincial Court on Feb. 12The investigation remains ongoing.
