For those people living under a rock, the month is April and not February.

Which means golf courses should not be opening for the first time, but already have seen hoards of birdies, bogeys and pars.

Still good things come to those who wait.

And the wait is over as the 18-hole Balfour course begins the 2011 season this week.

The Les Furber designed facility opens the driving range for patrons Monday before sending golfers out to the first tee box Friday, April 15th.

“Last year we opened March 15th, so we’re a full month behind,” said Balfour club professional Brad Woods. “But last year it rained a lot in April so maybe we’re right on schedule.”

Balfour is not the first course out of the starting gates.

Woods said drier courses in Christina Lake, Creston and Birchbank have already seen players on the track.

Castlegar is offering a modified nine until the snow backs off from some of the isolated parts of the course.

The Balfour course is known a challenging course with clearly defined fairways capped with beautifully contoured greens. All these while players get the opportunity to witness the stunning beauty that is emphasized by the natural surroundings.

Some of the highlighted tournaments this season at Balfour include the Ted Hargreaves Memorial, the Barry Crispin Memorial, the Seniors and Ladies Opens as well as the Men’s Match Play in late May.

Call the Balfour pro shop at 250-229-5655 to make a tee time.

No date on when Granite Pointe at Nelson will open.
