Kootenay golfers did not get off to great starts on the home track at the B.C. Amateur Junior Golf Association Championship Tuesday at Rossland/Trail’s Birchbank course.

Brenan Moroney of the home course heads the nine-player West Kootenay Zone One Junior Golf contingent shooting a 4-over-par 76 to sit eight strokes behind the leaders — Kevin Kwon of Pit Meadows and defending champion Adam Svensson of Surrey.

The two leaders opened with a 5-under-par 67.

Moroney had his round going in the right direction, starting on hole 10 and playing the first nine holes 1-under-par.

However, the round fell apart as Morony bogeyed the first six holes of the back nine to finish in a tie for 45th spot.

Kevin Bennett, also of Rossland/Trail, is one back of Moroney with a 5-over-par 77.

Jordan Hoodikoff of Christina Lake is tied for 74th at 79 followed by Alexander Rugg of Champion Lakes and Tanner Kopan of Christina Lake tied for 89th spot with 80.

Braden and Tyler McKay of Rossland/Trail sit in 120th spot with 82s while Garrett Underwood of Champion Lakes and Kevin MacDonald of Salmo are 128th and 136th, respectively.

Round two goes Wednesday when the field will be cut for the final two rounds of the 72-hole tournament Thursday and Friday.
