Granite Pointe at Nelson will be filled with many young golfers as a field of 80 takes to the Rosemont track Tuesday for a practice round in preparation for the 2017 BC Juvenile Golf Championships.

The 54-hole tournament begins Wednesday.

One of the players on the course is Brendon Makeiv of the Balfour Course.

In only his second year of playing competitive golf, the 14-year-old is excited to get a taste of playing in a provincial tournament.

“I’m excited that I’m going to be playing in the tournament,” Makeiv told The Nelson Daily.

“It’s my first major tournament but it’s going to be fun.”

The Six-Mile resident, who calls Balfour his home course, received a little nudge to play in the Juveniles from coach, and club professional at Balfour, Craig Wilkinson.

“Craig thought playing in this tournament would be good for me to get the experience,” Makeiv said. “He knows I love to golf and being so close to home I’ve got nothing to lose.”

Girls and boys under 16 years of age tee off for the first round on the Par 72, 6208-yard track Wednesday.

Rounds two and three are Thursday and Friday, with awards to follow at approximately 4 p.m. after the final round.

Makeiv is familiar with the Granite Pointe course and realizes tournament officials will do their best to test the players with pin and tee-box locations.

“Granite is a nice course, but very hilly,” Makeiv said. “I’m kind of used to playing on a course like Granite coming from Balfour.”

“I’ll try not to put too much pressure on myself.”

Tournament play begins at 7:30 a.m. daily, concluding at approximately 4 p.m.

Spectators are welcome to attend.

Other local players include Xander Bankes from Redstone in Rossland and Nik Jenner, William Watt and A.J. Roberts from the Sunflower City course in Castlegar.
