City Advances Downtown Revitalization with Eremenko Demolition
The City of Castlegar is moving forward with the demolition of the Eremenko Building, located at 310 Columbia Avenue and 1224 3rd Street, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the downtown area.
This week, the City awarded an $825,000 contract for hazardous materials abatement, demolition, and site restoration has been awarded to Roc Doc Ventures Ltd. (Scott Contracting and Excavating / Haztec Solutions). The project is being funded through $400,000 from the Growing Communities Fund, $250,000 from Game Host Agreement Reserves, and $175,000 from Land Reserves.
“This project supports our vision of a prosperous city by enhancing the vitality and attractiveness of our downtown,” said Mayor Maria McFaddin. “Clearing the site allows us to plan carefully for growth and create space for opportunities that will benefit our community in the long term.”
The Eremenko Building, originally constructed in 1948 with an addition in 1968, has been vacant for years. The City purchased the property in 2021 to prepare it for redevelopment.
The contractor will mobilize on-site in late summer and prepare the area. Abatement will start inside the building to safely remove hazardous materials, which is expected to take around two months, with demolition to follow.
Once complete, the property will be restored with gravel, making it future-ready for opportunities that support a vibrant city centre and align with the City’s Downtown Area Plan.
